Southern living

June 24th, 2005

Silly me. I thought I lived pretty well, until reading this Forbes analysis:

What It Costs To Live Well: South

… we are not looking at an opulent lifestyle–no private helicopters, megayachts or castles in France–but, instead, at what many Americans would consider the upper middle class American dream: private schools for the kids, a large house in an upscale neighborhood, a weekend retreat, a pricey night out once a week and a couple of very nice cars.
-
The least expensive places to live well were Oklahoma City, Jackson, Miss., and Little Rock, Ark.–states that tend to be near the bottom when it comes to median household incomes…
-
But even in those metro areas–such as Oklahoma City and Jackson, which our analysis indicated were the least expensive cities in the South–the good life still requires a hefty paycheck. After paying the various tax bills, taking into account other costs and living in a home in the tony Gaillardia section of Oklahoma City, the Fictionals need to earn a little more than $200,000 per year

What’s most depressing about this whole thing is realizing that I’m not friends with anyone who lives “well”. I need a beer… Make that a Michelob… Ultra.
