Blogs & SUV’s running out of gas

March 25th, 2005

Blogs, like SUV’s, take a lot of energy if you drive ‘em much. And many bloggers, just like many SUV owners, find themselves asking “what am I doing driving one of these things anyway?”

There is little doubt that as more blogs enter the blogosphere and the long tail becomes even longer that the fight for relevance and market will see more top bloggers suffer burnout as corporate blogging continues to have the upper hand over what has previously been the domain of amateurs and hobbyists.

Corporate bloggers. Professional bloggers. What can ya do? Start a blogger’s union made up of unpaid bloggers? That would suck. I think.

As far as burnout, I occasionally feel pressure to post, but I don’t let it get to me. Astute readers of this blog understand that sometimes I simply put out a dumb-ass post. And I think that’s what keeps the pressure from getting to me.

I looked to Ricky Nelson for philosophical guidance when I began blogging: “You see, ya can’t please everyone, so ya got to please yourself.” I’ll always have that advantage over professional bloggers. And besides, it still surprises me as to what type of post strikes peoples’ fancy anyway.

Professional bloggers? Let ‘em burn.

Good point. If you don’t enjoy it, why do it? Especially if there’s little or no money involved.

I blog and drive an SUV – do you feel the energy drain on the planet? (Love the analogy, btw)

Sorry to see anyone suffer burn-out; but I can see how professional bloggers could arrive at that point when one feels the pressure to post top notch material day after day. It might be wrong to say (but I will anyway), that it just makes more room for the rest of us and our “dumb ass posts.”

I enjoy my “dumb ass posts” and you are right it is amazing to see what will strike a fancy.

Excellent points Mike. You shouldn’t burn out on something you do for fun.
