Oyster stew
December 24th, 2004Our family’s holiday celebration has officially kicked off today and we truly appreciate the good things life has bestowed upon us, even including our traditional Christmas eve oyster stew that some crazy ancestor thought was a good idea to adopt. And even though I’m getting pretty good at making it, the griping begins as soon as the pot hits the stove.
One year, during a particular feisty fuss from our teen-aged kids, I proposed ending the stew tradition and starting our own with pizza or something else. “You can’t do that Dad!”, whined the big rascals. “It’s tradition!” At least we’re not alone.
“When I was a kid, my father (now deceased) continued a tradition celebrated in his family: the Christmas Eve meal was oyster stew. Growing up, I remember looking forward to oyster stew, then, maybe some caroling or a candlelight service, but the reverie was always quashed by the reality of the fuss that’d ensue as we sat down to the soup.

No matter your spiritual leanings, I wish you the best spirit of Christmas and hope you all have traditions that inspire your family as much as does ours.
