Remember the Lawton

December 13th, 2004

Folks in Lawton have always been a bit fickle when it comes to governing their city, named after General Henry W. Lawton, who is credited with capturing famed Apache Chief Geronimo. The town has changed it’s city government structure five times since its founding.

Now Lawtonians are considering changing again, not their form of government this time, but the name of Lawton itself.

The proposal to change Lawton’s name is among several issues that could be set for the March 8 election, if council members agreed to resolutions setting ballot wording.

The mayor is thinking along the lines of a Dallas-Fort Worth type of moniker.

A legal change to Lawton-Fort Sill was submitted by Mayor John Purcell, who said many residents already assume the city’s official name was changed to Lawton-Fort Sill

I’m not crazy about it, but hey, whatever lights their fire. However, after rolling Oklahoma City-Tinker off my tongue a few times, I hope Mayor Cornett doesn’t get any ideas.
