My pick for Miss Oklahoma
June 1st, 2008Oklahoma has produced a mighty fine crop of young ladies for this year’s Miss Oklahoma pageant.
The Kiwanis Club of Tulsa has sponsored the Miss Oklahoma Scholarship Pageant for 33 years. During that time they have made available over $40 million dollars in cash and tuition scholarships to the young women of Oklahoma.
I usually root for the local representative, but this year Miss Little Axe can’t make it due to an injury she sustained while practicing for her talent competition. She’s doing OK, but the poor girl won’t be wearing strapless sandals for a while.
Normally, I’d then go with Miss OU, Kimberly Hulsey. Kimberly is an accomplished woman and certainly beautiful, but her talent – lyrical dance; her major – journalism; and her platform – R.E.A.D.; are so 90’s. And she’d likely just use her Miss Oklahoma notoriety to be a newscaster in Tulsa.

After a thorough evaluation of the 2008 delegates for Miss Oklahoma my bet is on Miss Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Ashlynn Frey. She’s not only smart, popular, and good-looking enough for a Miss America…
Frey is a member of the President’s Leadership Class and the recipient of valedictorian and freshman academic scholarships. She was named to the president’s honor roll and is the Freshman Class president.
Miss Frey also retains some of that Okie charm that appeals to nerds and geeks alike.
A graduate of Cimarron High School, she was named as 2006 Miss Cinderella during Northwestern’s homecoming and won numerous FFA awards. She also was active with the Student Council, yearbook, band and the Senior Class.

However, what puts Ashlynn out in front of the other contestants in this pageant is her bold talent and platform. If playing “Fever” on the flute isn’t cool enough, she really shows her spunk in bypassing run-of-the-mill, non-controversial platforms such as drunk drivers, exercise, or helping kids. No, Ashlynn has decided to take on an issue that powerful politicians fear to tackle; a problem so big that global corporations spend billions enabling it; a senseless act that kills and mutilates people of all ages and threatens millions daily.

Now that’s geeky AND hep!
Addendum – One of those bewildered Ogle boys had the gall to dis my girl Ashlynn (calling her a loser) and suggest that Miss Bricktown, Natasha Alikhani, would make a better Miss Oklahoma because she seems like a party animal. What he doesn’t tell ya is that Natasha’s platform is “Respect for the Elderly”. Now, the last thing old farts like me want is respect from 21 year-old wild women who like to party.
And talent? The girl can’t even blow a straight kiss!
Look were she’s aimin’ that thing. Unless there’s a midget… oh, OK, maybe she does know how to blow a kiss. Nevermind.

She’s a shoe-in to win.
