Dousing Firefox

August 27th, 2007

Kevin administers Blog Oklahoma, and he has a decision to make:

A long time Blog Oklahoma member has started to do something I really don’t like. He is blocking Firefox users from his site. The reason, he doesn’t like the AdBlock plug in. I’m not going to link to him here. Visit Download Squad if you want to find out more. This seems dumb to the point its an embarrassment. This guy trying to take a stand on what? Advertising? The only thing he is managing to do is let the rest of the web know about the Firefox plug-in AdBlock. Well guess what. I’m thinking real hard about revoking his membership in Blog Oklahoma because if it. I would love to get your thoughts on it.

My thoughts: Firefox is my browser of choice, however, I’m not for exiling a blog from the group because it blocks Firefox. For one reason, I haven’t missed it so far. For another, I may want to block people from using MS Explorer to visit Okiedoke one of these days.

Disclosure – Okiedoke’s layout is optimized for Mozilla Firefox.

I’ve decided not to do anything. I just needed to rant. It was just the reason why he was blocking Firefox… AdBlock. Not a design choice. Back in the day there were many browser specific sites out there. I imagine there still is. I use AdBlock. I really don’t need to see the “shoot the monkey” ads.

    I use Firefox… but I don’t really understand his reasoning… ?

He wants ads not to be blocked? Is he a business who can afford to turn away 1/2 of consumers? Cause my statcounters usually show that about 1/2 of my readers are Firefox users…

    Wow… that’s confusing…

  3. Mike Says:

The blogger’s premise is that by negating the ads placed on his blog, a visitor is stealing the rest of the content. Since Firefox supports that option, he chooses to block it.

I think it’s silly too. Then again, Okiedoke doesn’t have any advertising income.

That’s like saying if I sit on the bus but don’t read every ad on the overhead shelves, I’m stealing my bus ride… (!?!?)

    Or… if I buy a newspaper and don’t read the ads, I’m stealing the news stories… (!?!?!)

    Isn’t it?

Thanks for the heads up on AdBlock. I luv my firefox browser it’s soooo much better than IE 7. It would be pretty irrational for a blogger to block such a popular and stable browser.
    Peace Out,

Optimized? My site is pessimized. Looks horrible in any browser.
