Maybe you had to be there

June 16th, 2006

Comedy last night at our local Indian casino.

Darrell Littleton opened the show with a rat-tat-tat style of delivery that threw off any potential hecklers. Littleton, a black man, wooed our famously redneck crowd into submission with depreciating humor that hit upon about every sector of society, beginning with his own. As might be expected, he got the biggest response from his racial and gay material. Surprisingly, he had good success polling the audience on sensitive topics from politics to sexual preference. After receiving an overwhelming response against gay marriage, Littleton asked the crowd:

“Do we have any gays here in the audience? Come on, surely someone in this crowd wants to come out of the closet tonight… so we can all beat your ass back into it.”

It got plenty of laughs, but probably also made a few people think.

It was immediately apparent that headliner Tommy Savitt had a unique comedy style of his own. You can catch a (realPlayer) glimpse here (rated R), though his act last night was more polished. Savitt came on stage with disheveled hair, t-shirt and baggy jeans. His routine revolved around his own “feminist” view of relationships, where he’s not the normal guy.

“I have respect for women. I’m not like the rest of these guys who walk into a bar and start hitting on you. They’re like predators. Ya see, I’m not like that. I’m more like a parasite.”

While Tommy’s advice on relationships may be questionable, his answer to unemployment is spot on.

“If we want to solve the unemployment problem here, all we have to do is round ‘em up and send ‘em to Mexico. Then, when they sneak back in, they’ll all find jobs.”

I expect to see Savitt in bigger and better things.
