Legislation makes Oklahoma voter a turkey

April 24th, 2006

When it was found that Oklahoma’s official state game bird, the wild turkey, was not really official,

For years the wild turkey was thought to be an Oklahoma emblem, but it turns out the bill giving them official status never received House approval or a governor’s signature.

legislators sprang into action.

[Rep. Guy] Liebmann was working on a bill that would make the cartoon character Mr. Voter, drawn by The Oklahoman’s Jim Lange, the state’s official editorial cartoon. However, Leibmann had been told that since Mr. Voter wasn’t retired, he didn’t yet qualify for the designation.

Liebmann decided to replace the Mr. Voter language in his bill with the measure that would officially put the wild turkey on the state emblem list.

Knowing how the legislature feels about the electorate, there probably wasn’t much language in the bill that needed changing.
